T Minus 4 Days Until Capstone Zine Submission

A meme of an orange tabby cat resting face on a concrete fence with the caption: Can't You See I'm Busy?

The last few weeks have been very productive and busy for us!  This last weekend was no different. We are getting ever closer to revealing the updated zinecat.org interface which will have more, more, more records.  31k+ records. That should be released by the end of the week, hopefully. There have been some additional ingest hiccups involving version control of ingest MAPs, dates continue to be a thorn, and it turns out that multiple fields of a data set pointing to the same field within Collective Access doesn’t turn out well (i.e. if there are multiple columns of data with “notes” — MARC 500 = Notes and 520 = Summary fields — all pointing to the CA field ca_objects.general_notes).  Eric from OpenFlows has been tremendously helpful in providing support to us in this process and along with Jenna has done some impressive troubleshooting. The solution to the last hiccup listed above was to add another field in Collective Access so that both data points can successfully transfer into the system. Now, we just have to figure out why some of the Subject Headings are showing up as numbers!

In other updates, Jenna and Lauren have drafted 98% (not a scientifically accurate percentage) of Shared Authority: The Capstone Issue and will be co-working this Wednesday on cutting and pasting and otherwise zine making.  Lauren will bring her Kraft Edgers Scissor Caddy and Jenna has a stencil set ready to go. Both will bring their sticker collections.  There is a word search and a MadLib! Making a zine is just one of the many rewarding benefits of being involved in this project. The zine will be submitted to our advisers, Maura and Lisa, on Friday.  We hope they like it! And we hope you will too.

(Sidenote shoutout to Jenna who recently had a zine she wrote in grad school published in the peer reviewed Journal of Interactive Technology and Pedagogy!)

As we move forward and out of the CUNYverse, we need to make plans for alternative web hosting.  This means that ZineCat will no longer be hosted on Reclaim Hosting and the ZineCat blog will be moving to a subdomain on zinelibraries.info  This may in fact be the last blog post on the original WordPress instance, but we will do our best to make sure it’s as painless as possible for all involved.  Fingers crossed.

We also applied for graduation and to receive our certificate of completion for Interactive Technology and Pedagogy.  We don’t plan on walking in graduation, but we are looking forward to receiving our diplomas.
